This work uses multiple media transfers from super8 film, home telecine, TV screen re-filming and framing to re-contextualize and explore images of mechanical and biological transformations.
A VHS recording showing the movements of a cast iron mechanical money box reappear having been re-cast as a wax candle.
This transferring from one media to another, one object to another an action into a sound conveys a fascination with culturally haunted legacies.
Simon Rattigan has developed his practice through sculpture,
installation, film and video.
His work is an ongoing investigation into the relationship of image, sound and language exploring sensory, auto biographical experience and inter-subjectivity.
He layers material process and media transformation of found objects and footage to interweave personal narrative with political history and pose questions of post-colonial identity and subjective truth.
His works have been exhibited internationally and have made use of Museum and archive loans and displays and taken the form of installations, videos and books.
