When reading, 'our mind notes here and there a few characteristic lines and fills all the intervals with memory images which, projected onto the paper, take the place of the real characters and may be mistaken for them.' (p.126)

'If, having gazed at any object, we turn our eyes abruptly away, we obtain an 'afterimage' of it: Must we not suppose that this image existed already while we were looking?' (p.124)

Perception may initially consist of an arrest, but 'more subtle movements soon graft themselves [and] combine to retrace the outlines of the object perceived.' 'Memory thus creates anew the present perception; or rather it doubles this perception by reflecting upon it either its own image or some other memory image.' (p.122)
