Doubtful Guests looks to the overlap between sensation and hallucination and the role of isolation in fantasy. The work centres around the use of a psychomanteum, an object used by spiritualists to “talk” with the dead. High expectations and limited sensory information would combine to produce hallucinations (an effect later studied in Donald Hebb’s McGill experiments).

The psychomanteum will be available for use in the evening
(5-8pm) for the duration of the show with a closing talk exploring the links between the internet, religious practice and sensory deprivation. Alessandro Moroni will also perform a reading from Margaret Howe Lovatt’s notes on her attempts to
communicate with dolphins.
